A mixer worth the wait!
I decided to begin baking artisan breads. Most of these breads involve very stiff dough that is difficult for mixers to handle. I had been using my mother's Kitchenaid from the late 1970s and although it is a beast, it was struggling to not overheat. I have been watching the KitchenAid Pro 60s for a few months and when a new one came available at a great sale price I pounced on it. Because these mixers last years (we're talking 42 years on the last one we bought and it is still working), I was hoping to get a color that would not totally date itself. My mom's KitchenAid is harvest gold---need I say more? I would have loved sky blue or pink, which would have been campy and fun, but was not willing to pay an extra $200 for a fun color. I went with red because to my knowledge red has never been totally "in" or "out" of style. It arrived quickly and as I unpacked it, I noticed that although it has a much more substantial motor than my old KitchenAid, it isn't much heavier. Because it fixed and not hinged, it is easier to carry without fear of dropping it if the top isn't locked in place. As my daughter observed, "That thing can mix cement!!" It is powerful and amazing! It takes a little patience to lock the mixing bowl into place, as the snap on the neck of the mixer isn't real easy to lock into. It is taking a little getting use to having the bowl that raises and lowers instead of having the mixer itself on a hinge - but seems like a good idea. It is powerful and I anticipate is lasting as long as my mom's. I hope my grandchildren (yet to be born) will be happy with a shiny red KitchenAid mixer in 40 years. They are built to last.
