  • Great Value, Good, but alas, not great quality

I bought these specifically to do some pastel paintings on velour paper. Some top-notch wildlife and animal pastel artists use velour almost exclusively for their work. This particular brand of pencil was recommended by one of them to use on velour. The set came fairly quickly, considering it was shipped all the way from Poland. It was well packaged and not 1 piece was missing or damaged. It is also an Excellent value...Blick wanted over $80 for the same set and Amazon was over $75. Though I think the Gioconda's are of very good quality and do have some positives, they simply were out-performed by my Stabilo Carb-Othello's. The Gioconda's are softer which gives them an advantage for general shading and under painting, and they also blend a little bit better then the Stabilo's. However the Carb's can hold a much sharper point, stay sharp longer and lay down their color more precisely, more intensely and with less work. Probably if these had been my first experience with pastel pencils I would have been more disappointed and given them only 3 stars. If you already own a set of Carb Othello then I would recommend this brand as an alternative or as a way to expand the amount of colors in your collection; but if you're trying the medium for the first time, go for the Stabilo's... there's a reason why they're the top selling brand.

  • Very nice pencils

These are excellent pastels pencils which I love, however the drawback in falling in love with these pencils is you cannot repurchase singles, you have to purchase a complete set. Can't say I would do that as there are some other great pencils that I can repurchase individually. Also these pencils came from Poland which is another drawback when I can purchase other brands in Australia, where I live. Thought I would pass on this information. My art teacher recommended this brand and yes they are lovely; however availability is a problem.

  • GREAT

I definitely recommend it to buy it! I prefer it over the Faber Castell because Koh-I-Noor are softer (not all of them but still it is good). I say softer because it is more chalky and close to Charcoal pencil, while Faber Castell is good and it has its own usage, but sometimes I thought maybe I have color pencil in my hand.

  • A good find for the professional palette enrichment.

The parcel came fast and the content of 48 pencils undamaged what is great. Compare these pastel pencils with the Stabilo and CaranD'ache I have already in use, I found them softer then CaranD'ache but slightly harder then Stabilo. By the colour intensity/pigment richness I would position them on the third place. The absence of darkest hue in greens was an unpleasant surprise though. Doing the fine portrait I liked the nuances/hues of all the pencils shades involved. These pencils require some grid primed or gelatin sized paper - same as CaranD'ache ones - when used on an appropriate surface they work really well. I combine them with Stabilo since this brand has their pencils as richer in colours & tonality and together they have no limits within images creation.

  • good quality, love them!

Good quality, love them! Easy to work with, rich colors. I always used a Koh-I-Noor pencils, but these are my first Koh-I-Noor pastel, and I was little bit worry if they are not that good. But They are great, would buy again, and would recommend to my friends artists.
