Place takes centre stage, and our environment: ancient places; the wild wood; rivers; sea; climate; roads, streets, buildings are the source of the book's people and communities that are given life by the author. In Crane's own words it is "a geostory" rather than a history and this reader tends to agree with him. Policy makers; politicians; city hall: anyone who has a stake in shaping our future, shouldn't ignore this book.
