Well worth reading.
I bought this as I missed the film and enjoy having a book as it can be picked up easily when convenient. I was a little concerned after reading reviews that I would find it too upsetting, but it was compelling without being devastating. I found it descriptive and could easily picture the island and family life of the characters. It addressed a type of problem that many of us have come across, that of being unable to make the right desicion because whatever you decide you can't win. This book also demonstrates how easy it is to not take action and hope it all gets better, when in fact the situation often escalates into something far worse. Emotionally strongly engaging
Our book club found the story very moving and the book generated plenty of animated discussion. People engaged strongly with the moral struggle of Isabel on finding an abandoned baby after losing three of her own and were very emotional about the book's ending. Her husband, Tom, seemed unrealistically morally upright and somewhat two dimensional, but we wondered whether that might be a consequence of his bitter experience in WW1: that he was probably trying to deal with post traumatic stress. Some found the love story when Isabel met Tom was laid on a bit thick. Overall, we felt that as first novel this was highly commendable.
