About this product

Product Information

The unique character of British Rail was the outcome of outstanding design work from teams of engineers, architects and designers over many decades. Every aspect of Britain's railways became part of the corporate design, not only its locomotives, trains and rolling stock, but also uniforms, liveries, posters etc. Inspired by Brian Haresnape's cult classic of the late 1970s, this new book tells the complete story of BR design and branding right up to the late 1990s. It covers firstly the challenge of nationalisation and corporatisation, then the complete branding of the network to include trains, rolling stock, staff, architecture, the development of BR corporate identity and then on to the 1990s when denationalisation brought a new requirement for design diversification. This beautiful book will be enjoyed by all those with an interest in commercial design and branding, as well as enthusiasts of the British Rail era.

Although similar in style to books by the late Brian Haresnape, and particularly James Cousins/ Danish Design Council, this book fills out the bones. Ian Allan who have had a patchy output recently has produced a really interesting top quality, attractive, well produced book on the various design aspects of the former BR. Very well researched by David Lawrence and with many relevant reproductions, this book will appeal to a very wide audience. All aspects of the railway design are covered very well, and open the readers eyes to an aspect sometimes taken for granted; if acknowledged at all. I learnt that when BRCW were designing "Lion", they eschewed outside design advice: this was their last chance to save the company and you would expect that they would embrace advice-but no. Instead they brought out something resembling a den put together with boards and corrugated iron then painted white! White in the steam age? English Electric also tended to go their own way: compare the look of a class 50 to a class 47! Further than that, British companies often ignored the brief: is it any wonder they could not sell their products elsewhere? On page 145 the authors description of the DP2 title is contentious, but that is no problem. Very highly recommended and a great read.
