Extraordinary book about a remarkably obscure effort during WWII. Building on POW escape efforts in WWI, a scheme was developed to support subsequent POWs. To build morale if they were 'staying' but to assist escape if at all possible, a very many tricks was developed to get information, maps and other escape aids to prisoners. Post war information suggests that the Germans were almost entirely unaware of some of these tricks, for example the way that 10s of thousands of maps printed on silk were smuggled across. It's also very readable as well as revealing a great deal of digging that the author has carried out.
