ReviewsWith their well-selected color photographs and easy-to-read text, these books would make good introductions to the basic natural history of the animals described for early primary school students. Throughout each book, "fun facts" about each animal are found in boxes placed in the photos. A simple activity that highlights one of the characteristics of the animal being described is found at the end of each book. For example, in Groundhogs, the activity is a digging race where the reader competes with friends to see who can dig the deepest hole in a certain amount of time, using a fork to represent the claws of a groundhog. Each book follows the same basic format so that it is easy for students to compare animals from other books in the series. Unfamiliar words are defined at the bottom of the page on which they first appear in a "Words to Know" section at the end of the book. For students who would like to learn more, each book provides a list of several books and Internet sources that describe the animals. An index is provided as well. The information included in each book is accurate. A glaring exception, however, occurs in the book on deer. In describing the leg of a deer, the author correctly mentions that deer have four toes, with the middle two forming hooves. She then incorrectly states that the other two toes are on the ankle. Like toes in all animals, deer toes are located at the end of the foot. In the accompanying picture, the label "ankle" points at the lower part of the foot of the deer. Deer, along with many mammals that are good runners, stand on the tips of their toes of their very long feet. To most people, their "true" ankle is about where you would expect their knee to be if they were put together like a person. Recommended.
