About this product

Product Information

The definitive books on the design and construction of the most legendary ship the world has ever known. The largest, most luxurious ship in the world, wrecked on her maiden voyage, has become the stuff of legends. While everyone knows the new White Star liner was glamorous, few appreciate just how luxurious she was. Even in Third Class, the accommodation was better than on First Class on many older ships. Here Bruce Beveridge, Steve Hall, Scott Andrews and Daniel Klistorner look at the construction and exterior of the ship. From the design of the boilers to detailed deck plans on board the world's most luxurious vessel, they tell the story of a liner built at the peak of the race between the British, French and Germans to build bigger and better ships. This updated edition includes a new introduction, textual updates and a number of revised photographs and plans as well as unpublished colour photographs from White Star Memories Ltd, showcasing furniture, objects and intricate detailing from Olympic, Titanic and Britannic. AUTHORS: Daniel Klistorner is a world expert on Titanic's passenger accommodations. Steve Hall, a renowned visual historian, has studied and researched Titanic's photographic record for over 30 years. Bruce Beveridge is a foremost authority on Titanic's exterior and general working arrangements, and, with Scott Andrews, an authority on the technical aspects of her layout and construction. Art Braunschweiger, editor, is a Titanic modeller and researcher. SELLING POINTS: . Book 1 concentrates on design and construction . The culmination of a lifetime's research and study by world- renowned experts . With over 900 photographs and plans . • And is a volume magnificent

Mis-titled, should read Olympic class ships magnificent - sends out the wrong message in my opinion as 90% odd photo's are of Olympic. The author does explain choice of title but reasoning is illogical and would mislead the novice. To be fair I did expect this but a new scholar may not, so if you want to see photo's of the Titanics' chain lockers they will not be here, nor capstan drives or winch drum for centre hawse etc as there are so few known photo's of 401 (RMS T.) What you will get is a very impressive volume (which surprised me) of the minutae of the construction of these splendid vessels This is not light reading and is only for the advanced enthusiast, detail and scope are tremendous and not to be under-estimated, research has been almost forensic and indeed there is much to be learnt, something new to learn every day it seems. Did QM Hitchens really turn the helm the wrong way ? Did Fleet really warn the bridge officer there were bergs about before they got to them ? Were the crew 'on' something if they made a speed record ? Maybe. More question than answers, and many answers in this volume at least of the ship itself. The most money I ever paid for a book and is outstanding value for money. Encylcopaedic.
