I reckon you can fit a hog ring with pliers or other improvised tool, but you would need three hands and the ring would suffer in fitting it. This tool allows you to grip the ring , ready for fitting, using one hand, leaving the other hand free to grip the item being secured. These Sealey Hog ring pliers are the best i have used, the angled head and the spring loading feature make them the best that ive used and owned. Easy to use especially with the angle

Good tool for the money.
Needed these tools to fit hog rings when re upholstering a seat. Most modern seats do not use hog rings but some do. Without the tool and of course the hog rings I would not have been able to complete the work. The tool works well, was not expensive and without one I would not have been able to do the job.
