Original Copy
I loved this book and found it so helpful because of how enraged it got me and how much I disagreed with it but that is not to say I didn't appreciate the perspective it had and it gave a fresh edge and was written really well, it was interesting and insightful and very well argued and I believe the author whole- heartedly believed what he was writing and did it with the view to inspire creatives and a few years ago I would have agreed but that is also what held me back. Now, what am I talking about? The whole premise of the book, the title, Steal Like An Artist implies that there is no such thing as original content and I found that quite offensive to some of the greatest artists known to have graced this earth. I do believe in originality or I at least believe in the pursuit of originality. That is my driving force and whether my work is stolen or not, I will be using originality as my guide, whether I create content that sounds similar to another artist who I may never have ever heard or seen before, I will continue to believe that originality does exist, whether it is in an intricate, subtle difference or a massive, obvious similarity I will continue to believe in original content, and my reasons for believing this are not just based on my ego towards my own creative process but in the fact that I have found such great artists through being open to this idea. The possibility that original content and style is still out there has helped me to find it and when I hear a great artist, I do not want to be a copy of them, I do not want their content, I want their work ethic, their traits, their passion, their determination, their will, their uniqueness and that is why I loved this book. To know that I could create original content and not just be a clone is the reason I put pen to paper at all and even if I am not original in the true sense of the word, I hope that I will be liked for bringing something different to the table instead of bringing the same flavour of tea. We don't need two of one great artist, we need one great artist to become two then three then four and sure taste may dictate a repertoire of having similar but that doesn't mean they are all the same, it means that one subtle difference is enough and being inspired is not the same as being influenced and sure, some may creep in because you know you like it and you relate to it, but when you get closer to your truth and further away from theirs you can be more inspired and less influenced and I firmly believe that this is the case for the greatest artists out there, compare if you want but remember, they may have been inspired but not influenced by similar artists or they may never have even heard of these artists they are being compared to, just remember the times before we could share content and lived fully in nature, of course now we can hear everyone we like to compare but maybe if we just enjoyed what we like we may stumble across these great, original artists through being more discerning and believing they exist, or of course we can compare the ones who have cloned themselves.
