Great, solid little recording unit
I've been doing live recording for years, I started with a tower computer, CRT monitor, bulky interface rack and such. I progressed through a laptop and a smaller interface and have made hundreds of hours of recordings this way. It always terrified me during the recording as I waited for a computer crash, it didn't happen often, I never lost much, but it always felt like trouble waiting to happen.
I just get a new Zoom F8n recorder and spent the last week recording about 12 hours of audio on 4 different gigs with it. I'm very pleased. It sounds great, I can hold it in my hand, and it just feels rock-solid. I hope it will just keep chugging along the way it is now, I don't have enough experience to comment on long-term reliability, but whoever designed it clearly knew about field recording. Its a complex box so expect a learning curve before you can exploit all its features.
Digital recording has sure come a long way in 20 years!
