    knock around mandolin

Great little mandolin, came ready to play out of the box. Lowered the saddle a bit for lower action at 12th fret. Lacks volume for playing in a jam circle. It would be wise if the makers would offer the mandolin without the shiny volume soaking finish, and who needs all the bling binding especially on the neck without fret markers. Plastic tuning knobs would soak up less volume than the metal one on board now. Neck design is very fast. Maker could provide string gauge for buyers info for replacing them with something similar.

  • Most critical review

A few issues, but mostly great

The tuning pegs are inconsistently tight. Some you can barely turn, others turn with ease and fall out of tune. The little silver cover for the bottom won't stay on. I don't know if there's a trick for that. But for the price, it's a great Mando.

  • Great price but minor issues

Great little instrument for the money. Nice finish and appears well built. The only real problem so far has been keeping the E strings in tune. Not sure if its an issue with the strings slipping on the pegs or just the strings stretching. Tried over tuning to increase the stretch and they seemed to hold key a bit longer. I,ve had it for almost two weeks and the tuning issue appears to be getting better. Think maybe a good set of strings would help, but for now will use what came on the unit.

  • Beginners mando that can be upgraded

I was skeptical about it at first but I adjusted the bridge and I have been playing it everyday since I purchased it. This is very well worth the price. There are also so many upgrade possibilities, you can make it sound like a $200 mando. This is great for beginners but has the capabilities to be upgraded to an intermediate.

  • Good quality for experimenting with instrument

I think this is an excellent value for learning the instrument. If I get to a certain level, I will want at least a student model of better quality of around $300. Really good instruments go from about $600 or much more. The instrument's short comings are the tone and tuning. The tone is so-so, but it plays well. I find it needs probably more frequent tuning than I expected, and I presume that is from the low-cost quality. Of course there's not guarantee you'll get a much better instrument if you pay more, so be careful. There is also some "buzzing" noise which I can't tell where it's coming from. I didn't have to do anything to adjust the instrument. I looked at adjusting the bridge, but it seemed to be adjusted correctly from what I could tell. The return cost is prohibitive, because you have to pay both the delivery and return shipping.

  • Super cheap with good sound and playability

It's a wow, wow, wow for the price, and far exceeds my expectations at that price point. I still can't believe it is possible. My other mandolins are a 1906 Gibson A, and a 1918 Ditson. The Gibson is far too valuable and fragile to play out, and the Ditson is too fragile as well. I bought the Rogue as a beater for porch picking, camping, and travel. It played beautifully right out of the box with just tuning. The setup was spot on, which I never expected. It sounds good enough to be enjoyable and looks great for a super cheap mandolin. It will never be confused for a great instrument, but it'll do the job well enough, and sound good enough. If it gets run over by a truck, I buy another.

  • Nice for price

I bought these for my sons as I am also a mandolinist...not bad for the price...comes with light strings so it has a nice bright tone

  • A great mandolin

I have played Rogue instruments for quite some time and they are an exceptional value with a great sound. They are very well made and sound comparable to more expensive instruments. I have always been happy with the product and recommend them to others.

  • Beautiful Instarument!

Appears well built and I was amazed how fast it arrived. Have yet to get it tuned, recommend an electronic tuner for this instrument such as a Snark or something similar. Looks like a great instrument for the money!

  • Overall a great little instrument

Almost everything about this instrument is awesome, especially for the price. The only complaint I have is the decorative end piece is not attached and restarting it after restringing it is guess work and luck.
