From the very beginning the plot twists and the way that the characters interact are spellbinding. As with all things Stoppard, the inventiveness of the basic plot is unsurpassed: two minor characters from Hamlet are imagined into their own story as a spinoff from the Shakespeare tragedy. You need to know Hamlet, or to have seen it quite recently in order to really "get" this, but it's probably quite an entertaining romp anyway.
