Neil Thomas’ books are always interesting to read both for beginners and experienced wargamers. The rules in this book are in line with his previous works and are simple to use but not simplistic. He gives his justifications for some of the mechanisms he uses that are perhaps initially puzzling for experienced wargamers and these seem to have a logic to make them acceptable. I like how he introduces variety into the selection of armies with players throwing dice to determine their composition, when and if units arrive on the table etc. - these mechanisms could very easily be applied to different periods. There is also a good overview of the history of the period covered by the rules and simple army lists for the forces involved in the conflicts as well as sample battles for the period.
