  • Freddie's transition to his 70s sound

The second of two LPs recorded with King Curtis on Atlantic subsidiary label Cotillion and released in 1970, I only heard with a recent re-release on vinyl. After the King & Federal sides from the early 60s that made his reputation, this seems to be the start of the Freddie King style that became popular in the 70s before his untimely death at 42 in 1976. I first heard Freddie with his harder rocking three LPs released on the Shelter starting in 1972 ("Gettin' Ready") after this release. It is clear this was a transitional release differing in sound and style from his less well-produced and instrumental orientated prior releases. King Curtis as producer, also with Donny Hathaway doing arrangements and Atlantic studios sound and session musicians and greater use of horns. Songs are mostly blues classics but done in a style not far from the sides Albert King was putting out on Stax at this time.
