I spent masses of time reflecting on which NAS drive to get for my business. Reliability was important and so getting a brand with a good reputation was a good way to go. With the number of high res images I produce and wanting to keep the RAW files as well as edited versions I needed something that had potential for great capacity - I also wanted a back up. This was straightforwards to set up - theres plenty of advice online and its been running without issue for many months. I've got my old portable hard drive with historical images connected via the USB port and can access this via the NAS albeit its a bit slower.

Hardware is ok but the software requires work. I would have liked to give a 3.5 star rating but of course this is impossible. It's straightforward enough to fit the hard drives and to set the unit up, the problems start when you begin to upload files. The upload speeds are painfully slow, I was getting 4mb/sec which meant it would have taken me days, if not a couple of weeks to get all my files uploaded. There's no manual but there's a lot of information on YouTube with various video instructions. After doing various searches and reading online forums I finally found out how to set it up to be recognised as an external hard drive. I can now upload at speeds of around 100mb/sec. This information should be more clearly marked in the basic setup instructions, it would make life easier. This is designed as being a home solution so can't be expected to be very computer savvy. This is the only NAS system that I've had experience with, perhaps they're all like this. I would suggest watching the online tutorials before buying to fully understand what's needed to get this system workingRead full review

After several reading reviews and watching many videos courses to be able to make an informed decision I finally found something I can live with. Very simple to setup. I did this after coming back from work and still manage to complete it before late night. I had an initial trouble with the drives as one of the two was not recognised as compatible, even though both were the same. I managed to initialise both drives eventually, and that was the longest period of the setup. After that, the rest was simply updating and adding the needed applications. It was unbelievable quieter than expected, as compared to my old four disks raid time machine.

I had owned a WD MyCloud for six months when they decided to withdraw support for it, rendering it useless as a NAS. The Synology had good reviews on YouTube, so I took the plunge and am glad I did. I used the 6tb drive from the MyCloud and, because I won't buy another WD product, bought a Seagate Iron Wolf drive for the 2nd bay. The software recognised both drives, formatted them, and installed the necessary software faultlessly. The Synology apps are easy to install, and there's one to suit every need. The phone apps are equally easy to use and install and connect every time over WiFi and 4g. Both of my smart TVs found the NAS and I can stream photos, films, and music to them faultlessly. I am really pleased with my purchase.

Although it is fast (for file serving) and not bad for photos, it does not have enough power to handle the Synology optional "Moments" package: it can become unresponsive. Note the Moments is preinstalled: I recommend removing it before adding photos. It is simple to set up, but it always takes more than 10 minutes: you have to wait. It is quiet, and the fan speed can also be controlled. The LED indicator lights have adjustable brightness too, so the small (not much bigger than 2 3.5inch drives) white unit can be unobtrusive. I find some of the optional Synology packages confusing: what exactly do they do, why would I want one? But those packages were not part of my requirements, so no loss. As usual the DSM (V6.2) OS is easy to use.

an amazing device. when mapped to my PC it acts like another folder and saving into and retrieving files from it is seamless. Also, it has similar functions from within my android phone. Would recommend!

Fantastic features for the price. Use it as a file server to Windows and Linux systems and also as a Plex media server. Plex required a little tweaking to prevent transcoding (done by client) but very happy overall. The DS220+ is more powerful if you need that feature, but at higher price.

requires someone with pc knowledge to set up secure connection, once set up seems to work fine. takes some time to upload your media library, but once thats done seems to function well. i recommend getting a apc UPS battery backup for when power failure, if you purchase the lead it will power down Nas properly with no data loss. good entry Nas if it just for movies and music its perfect. I've got 2x 10TB wich one is use as a backup of the other in raid 1.

Not as easy to set up as claimed. Bought to replace a Dlink because the app stopped working. But with how hard it is I could probably sorted a workaround for the dlink

Works well. UI is a little bit over the top and does not work well with the WD red series Hard drives but overall a nice piece of kit
