  • Adrift between two musical eras

Easily Maynard's least exciting album ever. Some great sidemen -- Lew Tabackin, Dick Spencer, Pepper Adams, Slide Hampton, Lew Soloff, Mike Abene -- but not much for them to do. Big Band was over, and Maynard hadn't yet found the formula of mixed pop and jazz that would make him a success at Columbia Records. Basically of historical interest only, for MF fans who want the whole discography. I've never heard any of these tracks excerpted for a compilation. There's so much better Maynard out there.
