A superbly intelliegent, impressive, underappreciated gem
A sobering character study, a cutting social portrait of the UK in the early 80s, and an eye-opening trip back in time and into the actual Conservative Party Conference, which gives The Ploughman's Lunch a true feeling of documentary reality even though it is a meticulously scripted work from the mind of Ian McEwan, with multiple layers and angles that reward repeat viewings.
