The Woodhead route is probably one of the the most intriguing in Britain: It was a great feat of engineering in the construction of it, and probably the most short-sighted in the destruction of the same!
The route was arguably the fastest over the Pennines between Manchester and Sheffield, and in 1954 was the most modern electrified main line in Britain.
Yet twenty seven years later (YES, 27) it was to be consigned to history. WHY???
