Not perfect, but a good GPS

I like the split screen when needed and also the directions usually are good. I also like that I can choose to have a lower volume for directions and volume turned up for the phone, although I wish the phone volume was louder. I have a hard time hearing/understanding. One other thing that would be nice is to have it learn my speech pattern. Frustrating when I ask Voice Command to find a place over & over and it doesn't understand me.

    Good & bad experiences

It would be nicer if the camera showed vehicle speed on the camera setting. It did not come with an instruction manual ( for us old timers ). It jammed on me, once, and I had a bit of trouble getting the device to start recording again, but it eventually freed itself up. If it feels that you are too close to the right side of your lane, it makes a noise. When it does this, I look at the passenger door rear view mirror and see no cause for alarm. The Voice Command does not even understand my own home address, even after many repeated attempts. It does have a 'crosshairs ' on the camera, so that you can make sure that your camera is ' on target '.

  • Already paid for itself in speeding tickets.

Came across this as certified refurbished for $65 shipped and had to get it. It now replaces a cheap dash cam I was using and also no longer have to use my phone for navigation. The best feature I'm constantly using is how it accurately shows the posted speed limits with my speed right below it, it shows red if going over the limit. This really comes in handy on the long backroads winding through towns where the speed limits are constantly changing and cops like to sit and wait. I can't think of a time it was wrong. Typing in addresses is sometimes annoying, just not as easy as on my phones app, but it always ends up working. Voice input is another story, it hardly works for me so I give up, maybe it's my Boston accent. It has crashed on me a few times, screen freezes so I end up just holding down the power button for a couple seconds and it restarts fine. Collison warnings go off when there's nothing in front, but only once in awhile and it's not annoying. Camera and video quality seems good, large field of view to show incoming lanes and sidewalks. To use the traffic feature I bought the gtm traffic cord, used, and it works pretty well showing delays and construction. Guess it depends on the area and whoever broadcasts the traffic. It gives warnings once in awhile about animal crossings, lower speed limits, I think railroads, and one time about a speed trap that wasn't there. Animal crossings and stuff like that are always right, not sure they show every one of them though, I don't really pay attention. Main thing I don't like is the suction mount will fall off if the cars parked for awhile facing into the sun, always worried about breaking the unit. Maybe I should look into a better mount. For me I got it for nav and dash cam, all the other features are just a bonus, and the speed indication is awesome and has def saved me a ticket or two so far.

  • An excellent value

I wanted to upgrade from my Garmin Nüvi to a GPS with a dash camera. This one fits the bill. The dash cam video is very good. The unit has several features that make the upgrade worthwhile. It is handy do know when a speed limit change is coming up or a school zone. As to the animal crossing warnings on I-17 between Prescott Valley and Phoenix, I don't know. The "Go" alert when stopped traffic is interesting; who doesn't keep their eyes open to see if for themselves. The collision and lane departure warnings are ones I would never, ever depend on. I keep my eyes on the road and traffic. The lane departure warning only works some of the time. In a 190-mile round trip, I never got it to "see" the dashed center line or the dashed lines of a four-lane interstate on either side of the car. The red light camera data are outdated. It warns of local cameras that were removed a couple of years ago. However, the unit meets all my needs and provides some features I will certainly be happy with. It is, I believe, an excellent value for the $178.99 (new) I paid for it. The screen has a sharp resolution and reacts to touches better than my former Nüvi. I think I will be very happy with it.

  • Works great - glass screen

I already had one like this previously - except it didn't have the dash camera and proximity warning . I really like those features . It switches from an animated view to the actual camera right before you get to destination - which is nice as well. I guess anything with electronics really makes leaps and bounds within a very short time and I was long overdue for the upgrade.

  • Garmin 51 GPS with built in dash camera

I have 2 Nuvicams which the screens are failing to work right .... brightness has set itself to zero. I've set it to 100, but it automatically sets itself to zero. I think that the Florida heat got to it ... I really don't know. Well I both this Garmin 51, it is a bit smaller but it works great. The only one thing that would be better would be to have the mount be magnetic. This unit is great other than that. And the price was great also. I would definitely buy another if needed.

  • Garmin DriveAssist 51 is Disappointingly Annoying & Unreliable

I have the Garmin DriveAssist 50 with back-up camera in my Jeep. It works perfectly and I love it. I decided that the DriveAssist 51 would be a good upgrade for my main ride. I am therefore in a position to compare the 2 models. Both have the forward facing cameras, and both will work with a Garmin backup cam. I am not using the back-up cam with this unit because my car is already equipped. While the features of the DriveAssist 50 & 51 are very similar, the DA 51 is a REAL pain to use and I'm considering returning it. Garmin Express doesn't recognize it on either of my 2 computers, regardless of which cable I use. This has been the same with 2 different DA 51 units. Sadly, I returned the first unit thinking it was defective, but the same problems persist with the new unit. It alerts lane drifts constantly even when I am nowhere near the yellow line. This is so bad that I keep it muted - which would be bad if I actually use it to navigate on unfamiliar roads. It shuts off randomly! That makes it unreliable especially since it just suddenly goes dark. Thankfully so far I just have it plugged in on my daily commute, and I have used it to navigate out of town only once so far. Although that went well, I don't trust the DriveAssist 51 to be there when I need it. I carry my old 2597 in the glove box as a backup. I might return this thing and just get another DA 50 which has proven to be a much more reliable GPS. Bottom line - The Garmin DriveAssist 51 has proven to be an annoying & unreliable model GPS and I definitely Would Not Recommend it to anyone who relies heavily on a GPS to get around.

  • Lots of great features

Simple to use. I like that it shows pictures of the actual lanes you need to be in when approaching exits. The built in dash cam is also a plus. Is the perfect size and stays put where you place it. Easy to mount and remove.

  • Solid 8.5 out of 10.

The technology is almost perfect. Some polishing on the voice recognition could help, but works. I hate having to type in an address, especially when I'm having to read it from another source. This device makes my job much easier. If you are using your phone for GPS, you are doing it wrong. I really like this device and highly recommend it.

  • Great idea, but not a perfect solution.

I can only give it 4 stars because the screen is small enough that some of the information is hard to read. Because of the built in dash cam the unit has to be positioned in the windshield area, above the dash, therefore in my vehicle that makes it hard to see because of the bright background of the windshield. There is a lot of information displayed on the screen so the lettering is pretty small. The gps works great and the camera is great. The idea is great. But a separate camera would be a much better way to go.
