About this product

Product Information

A beautifully told, deeply personal growing-up memoir from the BBC presenter about life, death, love and nature. Voted the UK's Favourite Nature Book The memoir that inspired Chris Packham's BBC documentary, Asperger's and Me Every minute was magical, every single thing it did was fascinating and everything it didn't do was equally wondrous, and to be sat there, with a Kestrel, a real live Kestrel, my own real live Kestrel on my wrist! I felt like I'd climbed through a hole in heaven's fence. An introverted, unusual young boy, isolated by his obsessions and a loner at school, Chris Packham only felt at ease in the fields and woods around his suburban home. But when he stole a young Kestrel from its nest, he was about to embark on a friendship that would teach him what it meant to love, and that would change him forever. In his rich, lyrical and emotionally exposing memoir, Chris brings to life his childhood in the 70s, from his bedroom bursting with fox skulls, birds' eggs and sweaty jam jars, to his feral adventures. But pervading his story is the search for freedom, meaning and acceptance in a world that didn't understand him. Beautifully wrought, this coming-of-age memoir will be unlike any you've ever read.

Excellent and descriptive book...a must read!.

Excellent and descriptive book..shoild be on school syllabus both for descriptive lanhuahe and for compelling and interesting content.. Chris' descriptions of his childhood and growing up, with unrecognised , at that time, Asperger's syndrome, and the way he has coped with it all, is a compelling read.

    Fingers in the sparkle jar

We chose this for our next Bookclub meeting. My friend (who is an avid reader) and I gave up. Very boring. Why do tv celebrities always think they can also write?

  • A trip back to my childhood......

Bought this book to take on holiday next month......but just could not resist reading a few pages.....had to slap myself on the wrist and force myself to hid it a way.......it has started so well....I have already travelled back to my childhood and can relate to so much of this well written book. I can understand Chris as I too spent a childhood emerged in nature and was"a different" child to my peer group. I somehow mixed up right from wrong after reading wind in the willows and thought frogs slept in real life beds......hence even now after 50 odd years I am haunted by the tiny frog's body I discovered dead and bone dry in a tiny bed I had put him in inside a matchbox......and then forgot about.. I lay in the grass watching the world above and below me.......it took many years for me to realise how different I was. The detailed accounts in this book so far to me are pure magic....and I can't wait for my holidays and freedom to continue the book at leisure.

  • A Sparkling Book

A fascinating insight into living within society whilst coping with a problem that causes a feeling of alienation, alongside a wonderful description of a childhood absorbed in the study of wildlife.

  • Great book, loved every page!

I loved this book - as an autistic adult myself, I really enjoyed Chris' reflections on his childhood, from his own perspective and the insight into what the perspective of others may have been. Highly recommend, especially if you like animals!

  • A very interesting insight to a child with Aspurgers.

Being someone who enjoys watching and listening to Chris Packham and his enthusiasm and commitment to wildlife, I decided to buy his book. You’re hooked from the beginning reading about his insect collections and his friend at the ice cream van when they were children.
