Byzantium - Constantinople - Istanbul. Compelling history - absolutely full of detail.

Like most people I knew little about this fascinating part of the world. If you want a readable book, which is academic but not dry, this is for you. The amount of bloodshed is stunning, as waves of people wanted its enviable position. For example, 20,000 Romans killed in a day.
