Vary amusing take on 'Hamlet'
Thoroughly enjoyable and very skilful. The writing is brilliant, and though I haven't read much Ian McEwan, this book makes me want to explore his other novels. It's a great idea with the story of his father's murder being told by the foetus! There are several thinly disguised references to the original play which are very satisfying to recognise. I would thoroughly recommend this book.

Very original and clever but I can't say it is an enjoyable read
Ian McEwan is a very clever and skilled writer and this book is highly original. However, the plot is quite shocking and I can't say that I enjoyed reading it. I think perhaps on this occasion Ian McEwan has been a bit too clever! But I would still recommend it for it's highly original approach.

A unique aspect
This was the first novel I've read that was narrated by a foetus! However, because of McEwan's brilliant storytelling skill it works. The whole thing was compelling and I loved it.
