This book follows the sequence of Berite's mother's return and the consequent war between his mother and father in allowing the perpetually seven year old to have 'fun,' This interlinks with characters we already know.He still has a complex relationship with others at school but this is alleviated by his friendship with Big Lou and Angus Lordie. What is remarkable is the heightening of this volume's style of writing and the author'd asides on medical issues. Thus this book moves on in issues relating to political issues such as the Scottish referendum and Brexit These remarks form the subtext and alert us to the voice of a writer who still has more to say.

As a staunch support of Mr. McCall Smith, I always look forward to the latest peregrinations of his familiar yet always inviting characters. His style results in a uniquely gentle and curiously slow telling of wonderfully funny, annoying and loveable people who have unswerving faith in their own thoughts and decisions, however illogical some of their eventual actions may be. But Bertie has so much belief in his own young logicality that we need him to spread his almost amusingly academic common sense way beyond the pages of the book and into our own minds. I find that any of the books in this particular series acts as a very welcome calm in our own busy and often unsure lives. Alexander McCall Smith is the Dickens of his day - better than that, he omits the real grittiness of our lives and soldiers on regardless of real issues.
