Exact and to the point.
The Author chose to sail around the UK counter-clockwise. Sailing around clockwise would have given him better winds. He didn't sail around the top part of Scotland through the Pentland Firth, a particulaly dangerous part of the coast with strong winds and treacherous currents. A wise decision.
