Guthrie Hutton has produced another accomplished book here, combining informative text with an interesting collection of old photographs of these four villages in the west of Fife strung along the north bank of the Forth. Culross he describes as one of the gems in the crown of the nation's heritage and today, thanks to NTS involvement, it is much visited. By contrast, nearby High Valleyfield was a mining village with one purpose while Newmills and Low Torrie developed to provide it with shops and services. Culross though had its origins in mining also, as well as salt-making so the four villages in the title are linked through coal. This is a great book with great photos and a superb text that really will appeal and inform both visitors and local residents.
