Premium quality sound and design in a device that will endure
This is my third Revo audio product, with two SuperStreams used in other parts of my home. I bought this to replace a modern radio based device used in the bedroom that had great features but its sound for music was not good enough for me. With radio moving quickly to offer more flexibility, choice and control via apps the need for a dedicated radio has lessened over time. The Supertone therefore offers truly excellent sound, at a level far above the bluetooth speaker market in a high quality device that includes physical controls. The inclusion of treble and bass dials is most welcome, to easily customise the sound as I listen. The design of this device is wonderful in the classic midcentury modern style, with a look that is similar to a music instrument amplifier. Either the metal or black version look wonderful, like a classic high end speaker in the modernist style. Using the device could not be simpler, press your button and stream. No remote is needed. I use a Chromecast Audio device with optional optical cable streaming at perfect quality into the speaker. The bluetooth connection is AptX so CD quality and there are two physical audio ins (3.5mm and RCA) too. That's all I'll ever need for this item. There's not a remote, but you really will not need one. If you want to control it remotely like a bedside radio, the SuperCD or their other units are more relevant. The sound on this is hugely powerful, including at low volumes - it does not becomes muddy and blurred into the bass as the former radio device did. The mids are clear in the sound along with the bass and treble. Of particular note is the sound separation, the speaker produces sound well beyond its physical size (which we will come to in a moment) so the spread is far more than any bluetooth type speaker I have used before. It really is excellent to have sounds coming from thin air, left and right beyond the speaker. I believe it might have more stereo spread than the SuperSystems by Revo I have, but it could just be that I am so much closer to the device when listening. It certainly is the equal of them in its sound. This is an 80W speaker, so very powerful for its use. You will struggle to use its full volume without risk of a bang on the wall from next door. There is a full subwoofer built into the base, so it is helpful to find the right bass sound setting using the dial to fit your choice. Where you place the device will also make a large difference to the sound reproduction and bass depth too. We all have very differing views on the level of bass we like, so the physical dial makes this easy to find. Please do be aware that this is a big device, it is not slim or a tuck-away speaker. To accomodate the technology of this quality, it is a chunky, heavy device that must be checked that it will fit and look right before purchase. It you have the space, it is a wonderful device that will stay with you. The inclusion of an Optical port means you can connect high quality inputs for the best reproduction now and into the future. It's hard to explain how far superior the sound of this is to other speakers, this isn't just a casual listening device it is a item that produces sound nearer to genuine high end hifi but in a simple, easy to use way. It can seem incredibly expensive compared to other units and I was able to buy it at less than the full retail price myself. It is a device to see as an investment that I envisage will be with us long after others have been replaced. There's not loads of gimmicks here, it's all about the sound, connectivity, simplicity and high quality design. On the basis that I am progressively moving over all my listening (for non TV use) to Revo tells its own story. For those looking for the combination of one box high quality sound and design, reflecting that they control all their music from other devices - this is an excellent way to go.
