Thule quality with Volvo badging...
Having recently changed vehicles I needed a new set of roof bars in order to carry an existing Thule roof box. I looked at various 'wing profile' options from the Thule range of roof bars, some of which were more than £300! I've no doubt they are very good, but £300+ seemed to be excessive. Instead I looked at the Volvo brand option and found a tailor-made XC40 fitting, which came in at sub £200, more than a one third saving against the Thule option. The question was, were the Volvo roof bars as good? Some more research revealed that despite the Volvo badging, the bars themselves are actually manufactured by Thule. It was no more than a ten minute job to fit the bars to the integral roof rails on the XC40 and without the need for any tools. You simply tighten the hand-wheels at each end of the bars until the torque ratchet mechanism 'clicks', which indicates the clamps are sufficiently tight. Then fold the end covers into place and lock them - job done! The bars have been in place for a week or more and there are no signs of movement whatsoever. I've yet to fit the roof box, but I have no doubt it will fit the bars as they are the same size and profile of those on my previous car. On delivery the boxes were a bit bashed and on opening one of the roof bars was slightly damaged. One black plastic cap has a small chunk missing.
