Upon his arrival back in the United States following two decades in the UK, Bill Bryson (Robert Redford) wants to find a way to reconnect with his homeland. Impulsively he decides to hike The Appalachian Trail, 1000 arduous miles stretching from Maine to Georgia. When his old buddy Katz (Nick Nolte), a crude, overweight, recovering alcoholic, calls him out of the blue and offers to accompany him, Bill gets more than he bargained for as they set out on an expedition that men half their age struggle to complete.

ReviewsHollywood Reporter - àprovides a welcome showcase for wonderful star turns by Robert Redford, who also produced, and Nick Nolte as two oldsters who attempt to hike the 2,100-mile Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine., Eye for Film - One of the hardest things to find to recommend to people is a good mainstream film, not aimed at children, that involves no violence or untimely death - this is a charming example of that rare breed, may they never become extinct.

    entertaining true life comedy

Always been a fan of Robert Redford and was great to see him again in a role now he is older. A serious but funny film about a couple of friends getting old who refuse to accept it. Good, funny, entertaining watch!!

    A Disappointing DVD

A disappointment. As a keen reader of Bill Bryson books I was really looking forward to this DVD, however I felt that it was poor. The selection of Robert Redford to play Bryson, might have been flattering 25 years ago but I thought he was completely wrong for the part. A very disappointing film. How on earth did Bill Bryson OK it ? Incidentally my Ebay purchase was perfect in every way so no problem at all with the seller, but the buyer needs to be more selective next time.

  • Disappointing if you're a Bryson fan

If you've read the book you'll be very disappointed with the film, it barely scratches the surface of the content of the book and apart from the overall concept of the film bares little resemblence. The film is lighthearted and harmless but will never win any awards, I felt it never really got going and failed to hold your attention, a good film should have a good start, middle and end and this felt like a bit of start and then all middle with no end, I never connected with any of the characters and felt like I was watching from afar rather than being there with them. They've succeeded in making a mediocre film about what is a genuinely "laugh out loud" book.

  • Films Never as Good as the Book

Bit disappointing. Bill Bryson is what is entertaining about Bill Bryson. Doesn't really need an actor to play him.

  • Undiscovered little treasure

Amusing, easy to watch. Luckily was recommended by a friend otherwise we wouldn’t have known about it.

  • Big disappointment

If you have read the book, do not buy this DVD. Skimming the story is an understatement. Mildly interesting at the very best. My own fault for expecting the book in film form.
