Tense psychological thriller with plenty of twists and turns
I'd seen series two of this show on BBC and liked it, but wanted to know the backstory that series one provides. In my opinion, whilst both series are good, this first series is better - it has in-depth psychological suspense, interesting character interactions and nuanced characterisation [of some characters, not all.].
New chief of the Terror Task Force in Copenhagen, Philip Norgaard, is a former soldier and war hero, a hostage who made a miraculous escape, a man of impeccable integrity...but is he? What secrets is he hiding, secrets that make him wake up every morning from recurrent nightmares?
Clearly under some strain he won't divulge, Philip finds himself dealing with the ultimate hostage situation; fifteen commuters trapped underground, held by three masked terrorists who demand a massive ransom in return for their lives...yet these terrorists seem to have some connection with Philip's mysterious past.
The series unfolds gradually, with many flashbacks to Philip's own harrowing hostage experience..building to a dramatic and nail-biting climax that won't disappoint in terms of action, but also has heart and feeling. It's a difficult thing to pull off - exciting action-packed drama and also an exploration of what war and imprisonment do to to the mind; but I think it works. Yes, there are a few moments when the action drags, when the subtitles get in the way, when people do completely ridiculous things [I've rarely seen such incompetent Brass Hats in any action series, how on earth did these people get to their high positions?] but overall you let that go, and get swept up in the excitement.
Series two - which initially I thought was better as it's all action and very little character interaction - I now think isn't as good - this has got it all.
Can't wait for series three!
