Reviews"A brute strength record, full of needle-in-the-red guitars and vocals pushed to the edge of distortion, and sometimes past it.", Included in Rolling Stone's "The 50 Best Albums of 2019" -- "Simpson, who started out with a bluegrass band, couldn’t sound farther from his roots.", "A dark concept record that doubles as a country crossover, hard-charging with blues-driven psychedelia and disorienting pedal effects that wail like a screaming V2 engine on an in-bound scud missile.", 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "Over ten songs, Simpson leads his tight-knit rock quartet through a super-charged flow of indignant Southern Rock, strutting disco-boogie, and pulsing modern blues that do away with the typical melodic, structural conventions of country and folk."

I have to start this by saying that I'd never heard of Sturgill Simpson before this album.
Now, I've read reviews by Sturgill Simpson fans who don't seem to 'get' this album, so all I can say is perhaps it's not aimed at his usual fanbase.
This is an album where you'll find it very difficult to pigeonhole it to one genre.
The lyrical style has a strong country feel, but most of the tracks don't feel country at all.
Most tracks have a retro feel, with strong nods to pretty much everything I loved about the 70s and 80s!
You'll get a track that is hard rock, then a track that is almost disco, there are ballads, growling guitars and screeching synths, long solos that will remind you of Gilmore and make you want to get your Pink Floyd LPs out of the cupboard.
If you miss fx peddles and dirty guitar sounds. The days when electorinc things were still relatively 'new' and artists used them to the point where they are almost hard on the ear, then this is for you.
This sort of felt like what Tarrantino does with movie genres, being done with music genres.
It's a hell of a mix-tape.
I would love to have access to the tracks that Sturgill didn't include.
'Sound & Fury' by Sturgill Simpson is defo NOT country..more like contempory rock with a touch of ZZ top. Great playing, good production and songs to match.
