At first, the Lover Speaks may seem like a knock-off of the Human League. Musically and lyrically, however, the Lover Speaks easily separate themselves. Like "No More 'I Love You"s," "Absent One," and "Love Is: 'I Gave You Everything'" surge with bruised emotions.
I used to own this album on vinyl but, like all my other black disks, I got rid when switching to CD. That was 30 years ago. Since then I have re-bought many of my lost vinyl albums (as well as hundreds of new ones) but never git around to replacing The Lover Speaks until now. Much to my delight, this album still sounds AMAZING. If any of you music aficionados have yet to hear this masterpiece, check it out on YT and buy it IMMEDIATELY.
Usually when I hear a song I like that is a cover (No More I Love Yous) - I like to track down the original version. I'm very glad I did, as "The Lover Speaks" is one of my favorite albums. Beyond the overly 80s production of this album is something much more touching, witty and lyrically poetic than you'd expect and I think the producer did a disservice to some of the songs by doing things the way they did. David Freeman himself re-recorded No More I Love Yous in a superior version later.
The album stems from A Lover's Discourse: Fragments by Roland Barthes. A book which I also own and love and songs match up to particular chapters of the book, so its well worth a read if you like the songs here.
Its a shame the follow up album was shelved (The Big Lie - it pops up on eBay sometimes as a "Not For Sale" promo disc) as its a very powerful album as well.
I misplaced the original cd that I loved. This album gives so much more. Excellent album and excellent value for money. Received well on time and packaged well
