Strimmers
If you'd like to ensure an even lawn from edge to edge, a strimmer can help. Strimmers are mechanical gardening tools that are used to cut back grass and foliage in areas that a lawnmower can't reach. Rather than using a blade, they use a monofilament line, which can be made from plastic or nylon thread. It's strong enough to cut through thick grass and weeds and will enable you to spruce up your lawn with maximum efficiency.
You can find battery, corded electricity and petrol powered strimmers from manufacturers including BLACK+DECKER, Makita, Ryobi, STIHL, Flymo, Hyundai, WORX and Honda. Petrol strimmers are the most powerful and can take on even the strongest vegetation. They're best used on slopes or areas close to walls or fences where vegetation is thick and cut back less frequently.
Both petrol and battery powered strimmers are cordless which means they can be easily transported and used anywhere without the need for a mains power source. Battery operated strimmers typically use lithium ion batteries, which last for around 20 minutes per outing. Electric strimmers are great for use near a power source and work best for light duty clearing tasks as part of regular lawn maintenance.
Grass and String Trimmers
Grass and string trimmers are the most popular type and are used to cut back long grass or grass that's on uneven terrain. They can also be used to trim the edges of your lawn and tidy up those sections of grass that fall outside of your lawnmower's turning radius.
Brush Cutter
Brush cutters are designed for the toughest weeds such as nettles and brambles. Depending on the style you buy, you can find models that accept monofilament lines and fast spinning metal plates. Brush cutters are the only type of strimmer that features a metal blade.
