The inspiration of Denmark lies behind much of the music in this recording. The English composer and conductor Matthew Taylor (b. 1964) readily confesses to a fascination with the music of Carl Nielsen, and, as with Nielsen's own music for winds, Taylor's shows a similar blend of symphonic purpose and bucolic humor.
This composer was new to me and the CD here is a great introduction to an interesting musician. The ensemble recording someone's work is a good sign of quality and this one - Waldegrave - is top notch. The pieces are all for wind, which isn't everyone's favourite sound but it does help reflective moods and Taylor is an inventive composer, varying his effects. I'll be looking up more of his work - CDs preferably. It is so difficult to have an audience for contemporary work that (even if the music isn't completely to your taste) each outing really deserves support and everyone involved in this, from the label to the artists, earns praise.
