This collection of four (4) Mr. Moto novels by John P. Marquand contains two I didn't have. They are just as good as the others and were a real value in the hardback book. John Marquand was a very popular writer in the 1930's, 40's, and 50's. He died in 1960, and his written works seem much neglected today. Nevertheless, I've now read 15 of his novels (including 5 of the Mr. Moto series) and with exception have found them to be very good. The exception is for "Timothy Dexter Revisited," which is a re-write of something he had done early in his career. The book is not worth reading, in my view, as its main character, Timothy Dexter, was an inconsequential person in the early time of U. S. history. He died in the early-1800's and left little of value or use to anyone. It almost seemed like Marquand had lost a bet in trying to revive the story of a New England culture long passed. Back on Marquand's other works, the best I've found is "H. M. Pulham, Esq." which was made into a 2-hour movie starring Robert Young, Hedy Lamarr, Ruth Hussey, Charles Coburn, and Van Heflin. Just a terrific filml and fairly faithful to Marquand's book up until the end. I actually think the movie ending is better than the book. As to the Mr. Moto novel series, it too was made into a movie series, starring Peter Lorre. I haven't seen any of the films yet as they are generally quite pricey if one tries to buy the whole set of 8 or 9 volumes. But if the books are any sign of worth, the films should be, as well.
