  • Febi Bilstein - Rear Engine Mount

Febi Bilstein, are one of the more renowned vehicle parts maufacturers. As expected this engine mount is of excellent quality, the main body is robust; which considering the forces of torque being applied to this part is important, and additionally the part has been accurately and cleanly cast or manufactured. Many parts on modern vehicles now use a magnesium aluminium composite and this particular item seems to follow this tradtion. The polymer rubber bushing is comprised of two elements the first and largest bush on the main body normally bolted through the vehicle bulkhead being of the voided type, the second located at the pivot bolt being of a solid bush. Their is debate within vehicle forums as to if a voided bush style as provided on this particular part, and as provided on many OEM or subsiduary vehicle bushes should not be replaced with a solid style instead. This part uses the voided bush style, i will explain the benefits to the two available styles below and would recommend the voided style as supplied on this particlar vehicle part over the solid bush equivalent from 26 years of mechanical experience. Benefits of a voided bush summarise as the excessive vibrations from the road surface, engine; and transmission or gearbox are dampened or more easily absorbed owing to the bushes design having a greater range of flexibilty within the polymer bush. This in turn means these vibrations and far less pronounced, or transmitted throughout the vehicle and reduce the driver or passengers travel fatigue, dependant on your particular vehicles ridgidity and the overall vibrations it produces this will also help reduce the possibility of loosing fillings from your teeth. Drawbacks tend to incorporate less lifetime from the polymer rubber bushing owing to this voided design. Whilst the fitting of certain types of solid bushes to a vehicle dependant on its placement and function can be highly beneficial, they genrally do substantially increase the shocks and vibrations felt throughout your vehicle. Through personal experience The solid bush designs will magnify and transmit the vibrations and shocks felt throughout the vehicle, and whilst they do provide more rigidity and less movement overall on the vehicle, or its parts whilst providing an increase in the particular parts servicable lifetime, an informed decision should be made as to the tradeoff to be expected. Speaking from experience the rear engine mount bush should be left standard, my own OEM original part lasted almost 12 years prior to complete failure, and its subsequent replacement with this Ebay purchase. Regardless of this i myself have noticed an increase in the shocks and vibrations transmitted throughout the vehicle, which is not a reflection on the replacement part moreover an indication of the amount of wear that had occured on the original part. This will and does vary from vehicle to vehicle, however i would reccomend a voided style bush for a rear engine mount, for further information and opinions visit some forums where this consensus is generally accepted.
