  • Excellent budget model of the Class 31

The Hornby Railroad Class 31 locomotive R3275 employs the former Lima tooling which was always a decent representation of the prototype. In contrast to the original Lima version, however, Hornby have provided the model with all-wheel pick-up, an improved motor which gives smooth performance and ample haulage capacity for prototypical loadings, and DCC-ready capability. In 2017, Hornby will be releasing a stand-alone TTS sound-decoder for the Class 31 which will further enhance this model. On the downside, this being a Railroad model, the decoration of the body is very basic (the cab-surround should be black, not grey, and it is missing a number of finer details such as overhead warning flashes and orange cantrail stripe), and the finish is unfortunately very plastic-looking (the finish of many of the older Lima Class 31 models is superior in contrast). The Hornby model therefore gives a good opportunity to re-motor a Lima model, to give it the improved characteristics described above (the tooling is identical and is thus a like-for-like swap with no modelling skills required whatsoever). This is what I have done with all of my Lima models, and I am very pleased with the result. Fitting the model with replacement X9665 wheels (that do not have traction tyres) also gives improved current collection without large negative impact on haulage capacity (it will still handle prototypical loads on level track easily).

  • Poor class 31

I bought this item from railsheffield who I do not apportion any blame. The fault is with the manufacturer Hornby. This particular loco wouldn't run round large radious curves without causing wheel noise scraping the underside of the body

  • Good priced Starter CL31.

For the price, this is a good model for a starting enthusiasts. Hornby CL31 models are hard to come by at a reasonable price, even used, so I was happy with this at a realistic price. this model runs fine and ideal to fit a TTS decoder.
