Reviews[Review of previous edition:] It would be easy to argue that no other individual has contributed more to modern roses than breeder extraordinaire David Austin., [Review of previous edition:] It would be easy to argue that no other individual has contributed more to modern roses than breeder extraordinaire David Austin. Here, he tells the tales of more than 80 of his English rose hybrids from the beginnings ('Constance Spry' 1961), up to and including several of his 2005 introductions (my favourite: Gentle Hermione)., At first glance, all you want to do it thumb through the pages and drool over the colorful photographs of truly stunning roses... This is a large book and is suitable to be displayed on your coffee table where visitors can enjoy the beautiful photographs... I encourage you to try out one, or more, of these English beauties in your garden., [Review of previous edition:] This book practically leaped off the shelf into my arms. If you love roses, this truly is a sumptuous book! If you can recall David Austin's popular original book published in 1993 you will have some idea of what is in store in this newest offering. Not only is the subject matter superb, but the Howard Rice and Andrew Lawson photography is amazing... Drool., [Review of previous edition:] English Roses is a love letter to roses, written by David Austin, the Englishman who has been breeding new roses with old looks for decades. Breezily written and admiringly light on self-promotion, Austin's book is filled with beautiful close-ups of his roses and the old roses they are descended from. There's plant history for the serious rosarian, but gardeners who just like to dream as they peruse big pages filled with luscious photos also will enjoy the book. It's a fine tribute to a man who has spent his life bringing old-fashioned grace and perfume back to a plant that too often lost its scent and natural beauty as breeders pursued the perfect bloom., These flowers and their kin are displayed magnificently in The English Roses. Photographers Howard Rice, Andrew Lawson and Ron Daker have produced a gorgeous full-page (eleven-by-nine inch) image of each flower. The commentary in this large book traces the ancestral history of the English rose as well as attempts a definition of its distinctive qualities. All that's missing is fragrance, which isn't hard to imagine, given the luxuriousness of the photographs., [Review of previous edition:] With The English Roses, David Austin has returned to the flower form of the Old Roses and has created and reintroduced many different rich fragrances. With their pleasing, shrubby habits of growth and their ability to flower continually throughout the summer, The English Roses are amongst the most beautiful and useful of garden flowers... any rose lover will be impressed with this book. What a beautiful book to have or to give as a gift!, [Review of previous edition:] Austin achieved great success as a hybridizer of his so-called English Roses, which possess a combination of alluring traits found in antique varieties and modern hybrid teas.... [He] explains the ancestry and qualities of his roses, presenting 80 roses in six subgroups that include more recent introductions. Only roses that have proven to be vigorous and disease free make the cut. Succinct descriptions sum each rose's attributes, from growing habits and overall shape to luscious fragrance, flower form, foliage, and origin of the plant's name. And breathtaking photographs illustrate the reasons English roses are beloved by gardeners everywhere. Rose lovers will find Austin's personal observations regarding the development of these exquisite flowers mesmerizing, while his candor regarding a rose's faults is noteworthy and will surely help a gardener select roses for any given situation or climate. Novices will appreciate a final chapter with useful tips on culture and maintenance., [Review of previous edition:] Full-color illustrations will make you want to cut them out and frame them for a bright bedroom or an elegant dining-room wall., This book is a feast for the eyes and that is exactly what I am expecting from a book written about roses. It should capture the natural beauty and grace of roses and this book delivers. But it doesn't stop there. The content is equally fascinating and informative... I found it very interesting and educational to read in David Austin's own words how he has developed his beautiful roses to date, what his breeding goals were, and what his criteria are for a good rose that is worth releasing into commerce. For David Austin it is not only a beautiful flower that counts, but also the fragrance of the rose, the whole overall appearance of a rose bush, the disease resistance and the vigor, and the ability to re-bloom freely... Since many varieties that David Austin has bred are introduced in detail it is also a good reference book and gives you the opportunity to use it as a guide if you want to choose a David Austin rose for your own garden. All in all, I have a feeling that you will love this wonderful book as much as I do! It would also make a lovely gift., A visual treat as 400 photos of rose garden vistas and exquisite individual roses reach out to enchant., This book seriously has me swooning! Pages of to die for bouquets... Beautiful illustrations of the gardens... And of course some up close shots of the roses! This book will be on my coffee table for a long time!, [Review of previous edition:] Roses truly are a sight to behold. Each one seems so unique, and they are all classified in this informative book, including their fragrances and appearance. It is the sheer number of roses that make the book all the more interesting... The English Roses is a great book for the occasional gardener or serious one. David Austen has created something amazing with his roses, just as he has done with this book., [Review of previous edition:] Anyone with an affection for roses will be very pleased with David Austin's new book.... Encyclopedic in scope and somewhat literary....this book is basically everything you could want to know about English roses.
