Eddie Murphy as you've never seen him. Wonderful performance.
I simply don't have use for critics. If I listened to their snobbish, pretentious nonsense, I'd have missed out on many very excellent and entertaining videos over the years such as this one. Don't pay attention to any of them. This movie is worth owning and totally replay-worthy. Eddie Murphy steps into new shoes here and he wears them well IMO. Eddie Murphy gets serious!
You really can't believe that Eddie Murphy can be serious but he really was incredible in this film as a cook and somewhat caregiver for a frail mom and young daughter. Mr. Church prepares the most grand dining experience meals and then leaves in the evening. The mom and daughter don't have to do anything but spend precious time together and Mr. Church does the rest. He does inform them however that his personal business is his own. He bring reading into this girl's life and gets her loving the classics and literature from his overwhelming collection of books. It would be wrong for me to explain anything further because this is a movie that has much drama but also the coming of age for the daughter as she blossoms into a very smart and beautiful young lady. From a hired hand to a life long friendship.
This is the best movie I have seen in a while. Why this wasn't nominated for an academy award, I'll never know. Eddie Murphy as Mr. Church is the most mature character he has ever played, and he does a phenomenal job. There are so many layers to this movie. So many different emotions come into play. I have watched it now 3 times, and still find new things I missed the time before. Not only exquisite storytelling, but a wonderful soundtrack to boot. Best Movie Eddie Murphy has done in a long time
Nothing like anything Murphy has ever done. Surprised that he didn't get better recognition. The story is told from the child's perspective about him, which is entertaining and heartbreaking to me. Tomatoes said this is why it didn't get better ratings because he didn't tell it. I think they were wrong. Just a wonderful story based on true events and a true friendship. Loved it! Many people see Eddie as a comedic actor, but notably, he has much more versatility than that. Mr. Church proves this with gusto. It is a heartwarming, often tearjerking film about a very unusual friendship that will uplift you and make you believe in humanity's redeeming qualities. 5 stars, easily. Mr. Church is a heart warming movie
This is a true story about a black man that was hired by a woman's boyfriend to cook meals for her and her daughter after she found out that she only had 6 months to live as she had cancer. She lived longer than 6 months but the man stayed to take care of her and her daughter for another 5 1/2 years until she passed away, he payed all of her bills and bought all of the food for them. A Must See Movie
