  • 1960s "Sons and Lovers" a moving adaption

The movie of Sons and Lovers is excellent. As is so often the case in adapting novels to the screen, the writers had to leave out the earliest section of the book. Although the movie is autobiographical in nature, Lawrence's portrait of Miriam was both unkind and inaccurate concerning Jessie Chambers, his first girl friend and the person more than anyone else encouraged and assisted him in his early literary career. Jessie was not Miriam. Having said that, Heather Sears' performance as Miriam was first rate as well as Dean Stockwell's' performance as Paul Morel. Mary Ure's Clara is vivid, but the highest kudos go to Wendy Hiller and Trevor Howard as Paul's parents. For those interested in Lawrence's early life, I recommend DH Lawrence: A Personal Record by Jessie Chambers.

  • A strong and moving movie with strong and moving characters and reationships

This is a captivating movie that draws you into the lives of all of those involved in their struggle to survive the bleak existence in this dreary mining town. It is a time of change in the technology and the social mores of the time as well as in the relationships of the main characters as they search to find meaning, happiness and fulfillment in each other. As a result of this the love, resentment, and all of the human needs are brought out in some very sensual, engrossing and disturbing situations. This in many ways is a dark movie but still the wonderful acting and interesting storyline of life as it was in days passed provide the hope that eventually all will be well and that the ultimate prize, love, may at some future date bring these persons all that they desire. The depth of acting that is experienced here is rarely seen in films today. A fabulous cast to be remembered and a definite must for the serious collector.
