1960s "Sons and Lovers" a moving adaption
The movie of Sons and Lovers is excellent. As is so often the case in adapting novels to the screen, the writers had to leave out the earliest section of the book. Although the movie is autobiographical in nature, Lawrence's portrait of Miriam was both unkind and inaccurate concerning Jessie Chambers, his first girl friend and the person more than anyone else encouraged and assisted him in his early literary career. Jessie was not Miriam. Having said that, Heather Sears' performance as Miriam was first rate as well as Dean Stockwell's' performance as Paul Morel. Mary Ure's Clara is vivid, but the highest kudos go to Wendy Hiller and Trevor Howard as Paul's parents. For those interested in Lawrence's early life, I recommend DH Lawrence: A Personal Record by Jessie Chambers.
