The Fitzgerald sisters return for one last romp with Werewolves in the snow of Canada, this time however it's in the year 1819 . Departing from the " coming of age " motif of the earlier films Ginger Snaps Back follows a more traditional approach to the werewolf genre - retaining the fresh take on an old subject that fans have come to expect from the series . The main reason everybody loves the Ginger Snaps films can be attributed to the chemistry between Katherine Isabelle and Emily Perkins and the fact that underneath the wolfskins the real gist of the story is about the love of sisters . That remains intact in this finale which just so happens to also serve as the beginning . Aside from the return of the main characters of Ginger and Brigitte , " The Beginning " isn't a rehash of what we've seen in the previous films ( other than the difficulties humans seem to have with werewolves in their midst )and gives us what we want - Ginger and Brigitte against the world and a pack of hairy monsters hungry for human flesh . Not quite as tongue in cheek as its predecessors , Ginger Snaps Back takes a more dramatic approach but still delivers the " stock in trade " black humor and interesting characters we want from the Ginger Snaps franchise . Best of all , it doesn't conclude on the same dark notes as Ginger Snaps or Ginger Snaps 2 Unleashed so from a particular point of view we might be able to say that Ginger and Brigitte finally win . Yay ! If you liked the first two Ginger Snaps films , in all likelihood you'll enjoy this third outting - despite the notable departure from what we have grown to expect . It is a suitable finale and setup for more fun with Ginger and Brigitte if we are lucky .Read full review
You can read my other reviews about Canada VS Hollywood on movies and why Canada has an edge over U.S. on the 'Thriller-Horror' marker (-: OK - Ginger Snaps back... I pasted the review it's as follows... The sisters are back and this time they've travelled back in time, manifest in one of their previous incarnations. Orphans traveling across the Canadian wilderness by horseback during the 19th Century, the girls encounter a recked Indian campsite where one remaining inhabitant issues a strange prophetic warning, the first of many mysterious encounters to come. When the sisters take refuge at a trading fort populated only by men, they soon learn of the monstrous beasts in the outlying land that menace the men both physically and mentally, as many seem to be moving towards madness and all seem to have something to hide. Ginger is bitten by a little boy and starts slowly changing. The sisters realize they must work to solve the prophecy before its too late. This film, providing a backstory for characters introduced in the first two films of the series, offers stunning cinematography by Michael Marshall, known for his work with gifted Canadian director Guy Maddin, and superb performances by all the actors, including many respected indie stars. The series has been a cult favorite since the first GINGER SNAPS in 2000, and this film is more than just another werewolf horror flick; it has a little of everything: fantastic gore and great action with a challenging script that has real emotion, all depicted with a beautifully Gothic aesthetic. My over all opinion. If you liked the first two... RUN OUT AND BUY!! I did. Also Emily Perkins is a 'hottie' in her own off beat way. So... I'd have patronized her and bought the dvd anyway! out of all three GS films, i liked this one the best. dont get me wrong, i really enjoyed all three, but this one seemed like it fit the whole werewolf theme most appropriately. it answered where the disease came from (where the 1st film didn't), all of the acting was good, the camera work and just the way it was shot (lighting-wise/ shot composition/ and filter usage) was excellent. and the overall transformation and bond of the 2 sisters seemed much more fleshed out. i wish they would do some sort of sequel to the third film and start a franchise off of it. and after that revisit the original storyline again after a major rewrite to the ending of the second film, it made me sad at how pathetic they made the true heroin of the story.
In my opinion this is the better of the two Ginger Snaps sequels. I own all three Ginger Snaps movies but as far as original story and direction, I liked this one. I have to be a little more specific and say this is actually a prequel to the first one. In the beginning it gives a fictional explaination the werewolf legend and its origins in North America and brings back Ginger and Brigette in the 1800s in a fort which is occupied by scared soldiers trying to fight off "monsters" in the woods. Definitely worth seeing if youre a fan of the first movie or a fan of werewolves in general. The Ginger Snaps trilogy has cult status for giving a different take on werewolves not really seen before on film and Ginger Snaps Back is no exception.
I bought this to complete the trilogy . Already had the first two . I really like the story . The writers dug pretty deep here . Going back in Canadian history , as well as creating some history of their own , as well as Indian folklore . I'm part Cherokee , and this appeals to me . The special effects were good and the werewolves looked pretty realistic , not overdone like in some other movies . I do , however , think they could have done a better job on the Captain's little boy . Didn't really look like a werewolf , looked more like a mutant or something . Overall , I really like this movie , as well as the other Ginger Snaps .
I finally bought the 3rd DVD and found it to be pretty good, but not near as fun as the first Ginger Snaps. This was quite different with an interesting storyline though which kept me watching, but I guess I was expecting more. Loved seeing both Katherine and Emily again and glad they didn't use different actors like they do with almost all sequels. It's definitely worth seeing if you're into werewolves but purchase all 3 films.
Ginger Snaps was a revelation to me. I had passed by it several times and - from the cover and info - it looked like the slick horror typical of the 90's+. So when I finally watched on a movie channel it blew me away! The story of 2 oddball sisters whose close encounter with a wild animal has one turning into a werewolf. This film - the 3rd in the series - is like the other 2 never happened. It stands alone since it explains everything and the sisters begin untouched. The girls are survivors of a shipwreck where they lost their parents. Lost in the woods in the dead of winter, they make it to an outpost in the Canadian wilderness. Too bad for them - it seems like the outpost is under siege. Werewolves attack at night and will not stop until everyone is dead. Excellent art direction, the script is sharp, smart, funny, it has everything! The actresses are superb as in all the Ginger movies. Highly recommended, even if you have not watched the other Ginger Snaps movies - why haven't you?! - this one can be watched out of sequence.Read full review
