  • Underrated Shakes the Clown stands the test of time and endures!

Every once in awhile a movie comes along that, in this case, despite mediocre reviews and 2.5 out of 5 stars or 5.6/10 on IMDb, lands right smack dab in the middle of your wheelhouse. For me personally, it is quite possibly the funniest movie I've ever seen if not hands down in my top three. Perhaps making jokes about alcoholism didn't sit well with many. I saw this movie back in the day when it first came out (1991) and one of the tag lines they used to promote it was "The Citizen Kane of alcoholic clown movies". Probably not the best marketing ploy as even snowflakes back then took issue with it. I remember seeing Bobcat Goldthwait making the rounds on the talk show circuit to promote it and being verbally attacked by professional clowns (they have a Union?) who didn't like seeing clowns portrayed in this light. Folks, it's a movie. Nothing should be so serious you can't make a joke about it. But apparently they took themselves way too seriously. Everything in this movie I get. The town, the clowns, the regulars, the cars, the mimes who get pummeled. Viewers who won't get it aren't in on the joke. It's brilliant. My sides hurt I laugh so hard watching this film. And the supporting cast is amazing. Tom Kenny of Sponge Bob Square Pants voice fame practically steals the show as Binky, alongside Shake's faithful sidekicks Adam Sandler, Blake Clark and a host of others including Florence Henderson and a hilarious uncredited appearance by the late Robin Williams. At the local tavern called the "Twisted Balloon" the bar scenes alone are worth the viewing. I'm thrilled this is finally available on Blu-ray because of the detail and added pop the costume and makeup colors received make it all the more tasty. Cue this up and grab your favorite adult beverage. Give it a chance and you might just "get" what Bobcat was aiming for. And the funny thing for me is I've never been a huge Goldthwait fan or found him that funny but in this film he just nailed it, absolute comedic gold.
