  • Interesting book, but not great literature

This is an interesting story covering the last six years of Freddie Mercury’s life from the perspective of Jim Hutton, his partner and gardener. It gives you a very good idea of what life was like living and travelling with Freddie, in often exhaustive detail. If it’s true, it also suggests Jim was very shabbily treated towards, and particularly after, the end of Freddie’s life by Freddie’s longstanding friend Mary Austin. However you can tell Jim is not a professional author. It’s not a well written book, and focuses almost entirely on the facts - where they went, what Freddie bought, what Jim worked on. There’s a lot on how Freddie treated Jim but very little on how the characters interact. When we’re told, five pages before Freddie dies, that Jim knew there would be trouble afterwards because Mary didn’t like him, this comes as a surprise because it isn’t mentioned anywhere up to that point. Similarly the book paints Jim Beach, Queen’s manager, in a very poor light at the end, but with almost no reference to him up to that point. With no building of the characters of the people involved, the book lacks depth and ultimately is a bit of a disappointment. And given that this edition was published in 2019, it would be nice to have an update noting Jim Hutton’s death in 2010. But overall, worth a read.
