Pros: Very well written and researched: this book looks behind some modern myths about early 20th century inventions and correctly places them in the Victorian era (e.g. the Wright Brothers’ flights were preceded in the late 19th century). The book also demonstrates that some current technological concepts which appear fanciful actually have considerable reality in the 19th century. The contra-positioning of modern and old technology is well made. The written details are superb and clearly referenced to allow the reader to check the narratives. The book also looks at the likely derivation of some ideas of modern Steampunk authors' themes as well as assessing Victorian writers clear fascination as to how their then current technology might progress. The book is not greatly illustrated but is adequate in this respect. Cons: The book could do with more illustrations and those that there are all grouped together in the centre of the book. Overall: This is a great book for those who like old technology as well as seeing the origins of modern derivatives. The book gives the technical background to Steampunk machines as well as an insight to the literary side of the genre. Highly recommended. Read full review

Well written book (by Simon Webb History Debunked YouTube) with great illustrations that is well set out making it easy to read on a subject that is not talked about a lot. The intriguing real (crazy mad) world of Victorian Steampunk. Had fun reading it.
