This review was written in January 2018. I probably last saw this movie in the late '70's on a BBC TV broadcast so I was holding my breath about what the quality of the picture would be on a "High Definition Blu Ray" release. I was expecting no more than good quality DVD standard IQ but braced for even less based on some previous disappointments with older lower budget movies reased on Blu Ray - however, I need not have worried and I was very pleasantly surprised to find that the picture quality is well above that expectation; while it's not to the highest modern HD standards it is still very good indeed and some effort has clearly been put in to a print restoration for the HD release. The storyline and production values of the film itself are basic and no doubt reflective of the low budget that it would have had available, but it has a charm and smack of authenticity in the depiction of gritty everday life in early '70's Jamaica that rise above any shortcomings and give a soul to the film that still shines through after nearly 50 years. For me the soundtrack to this movie remains one of the best of all time and it would be reason enough to watch the movie on its own - it perfectly evokes the atmosphere of very early 70's Jamaica and features many memorable tunes (I have had the film soundtrack on CD since the early 90's and it is close to worn out now as it's seen so much use). Overall this a great period piece for anyone interested in Jamaican history and music and it is a nice quality Blu Ray disk that the movie richly deserves.Read full review
