Diane Lovering and Richard Field have been lovers for five years while Richard's wife was living overseas. When she returns and still refuses to give Richard a divorce, Diane tells him she is satisfied with their relationship as it is. But Richard insists she think it over while on a cruise to Argentina, and they can continue their relationship if she chooses if and when she returns, which she promises to do. On board the ship to Buenos Aires, she meets Mike Bradley, who lives and has a ranch in Argentina, and they slowly fall in love. Diane returns to New York to tell Richard she fell in love, but he tells her first his wife consented to a divorce provided he will not be allowed to see his sons, and he gives her a wedding ring. Full of guilt at his sacrifice, she marries Richard and writes Mike that she preferred the security that Richard could provide. Some time later when Mike is in New York on business, they accidentally meet. Mike senses, and she confirms, that she still loves him. They go together to confront Richard with their love, but it is not as easy as they thought it would be.
