About this product

Product Information

Wacky Races presents you with the chance to take some of the lesser-known Hanna-Barbera creations out for a spin. Naturally, the racers who are gunning for the title of "World's Wackiest Racer" are going to be driving strange vehicles and wielding even stranger weapons to keep themselves ahead of the pack. You will have to decide if you're going to win by hook or by crook -- both of which are literally possible in this game.

Wacky Races takes advantage of a graphic technique known as cel shading to bring the cartoon characters and their environments to life. Cel shading gives the characters a stylistic appearance with sharp shadows playing against simple lines and limited texturing. Games employing this style have a cartoon-like quality to them. To further that cartoon feeling in Wacky Races, sound bites from each character are used during the races as well.

Players are able to choose from 11 wacky characters like Penelope Pitstop and the infamous Dick Dastardly. Some are hidden as first, so players will have the chance to earn extra characters and unearth special codes the further into the game they progress. The racing action is set up much like the gameplay in Mario Kart. Large racetracks with a variety of different track effects are available along with multiplayer modes. To succeed, you'll need to line up attacks, collect power-up tokens, and race for a golden star.

A classic dreamcast game, bringing me back to my youth. Revisiting it was lots of fun, good graphics and control, unique handling for each character... The only bad part is the AI. At first the game is pretty easy, not hard to come in first at all. As you progress and get more stars, the AI gets a little more intelligent. Then s*** hits the fan. Around the 00 Dick Dastardly challenge, the all the AI gets incredibly smart, not to mention THEIR cars (not yours) get noticeably faster. Around this time it becomes near impossible to progress. After a week of non-stop racing the mean machine, i had to give up. I used the cheats to unlock all characters, thus unlocking prof. Patent Pending, the Red Mac, and 00. I later had to use the unlock all ability cheat because I had no luck beating Dick as the Red Mac... Oh well... Still a great fun game to play with friends/family. Difficulty wise, the children that this game was aimed towards wouldn't stand a chance.

  • Could have been a staple game

Infogrames took a niche but beloved franchise from Hanna-Barbera and tried to introduce it to a younger crowd in the first system that could do the visuals justice. Unfortunately they did not capitalize on it and the game was a disappointment in 2000 and remains so decades later. The visuals hold up OK, this might have been the first game with cartoon-style visuals (Paper Mario and Parappa aren't, just to clarify) for its entirety and they're overall pleasant. The game design is underwhelming as you must complete track challenges to unlock the Wacky Races cup with a novel but overall floundered approach to a game world menu. The biggest make or break is gameplay and it's here where the game is in shaky grounds. Advanced style is actually the better way to play than Kart, but between the AI balancing (you have little hope of winning with certain options like the Slag Brothers), token system, and overall uninspiring tracks, it leaves a bit to be desired and doesn't help the game.
