First off, the graphics in this game, especially considering the hardware that it's being run off of, are quite nice. Advanced lighting effects, realistic sea-life animations, and decent draw-distance will immediately suprise any gamer who knows how old this game is. The game itself plays well, and being able to manuever Ecco through the ocean with tight controls is suprisingly fun. Jumping out of water to get air while flipping all over the place never seems to get old. The gameplay, and the progression of the game however, especially in this day, tend to hold the game back. It's fun exploring and collecting new powers, but the structure of the game is still level-based, meaning the player is forced to complete levels in a linear fashion. This combined with the extreme difficulty make a game that can be frustrating and time-consuming to play, and oftentimes not worth the while. A good walkthrough can remedy the situation however. The music is top-notch, as are all the audio/visual elements. If the game allowed more true freedom in player decision making and direction, it would be a milestone. As is, it's a hint at the possibilities soon to be provided by open-ended games such as GTA III.Read full review

I got this as collector game and have fell in love with the series as a whole. Best to play the first to to really understand where the story is by this point.

For those new to Ecco series, don't expect an easy game. Ecco the Dolphin is known for being notoriously difficult. But with infinite tries it enables players to slowly push through the levels. For those that have played the Genesis games the story here is not canon, but the gameplay remains mostly unchanged except for that it is 3D and supplements the third dimension. One of the new changes is the Vitalit (I think of it more of vitality, same thing). It is small crystals that Ecco picks up to increase his overall health. It adds a new challenge as to getting all of them. The graphics and sound are top notch for the Sega Dreamcast. Swimming is mostly fluid and overall has the feel of being in the ocean. As for whether this is a game worth getting, well...It really depends. Most of the game style is from the 1990s SEGA of level based action. I personally like Ecco because it is increasingly difficult why not forcing a player to restart and not too open in terms of exploration.Read full review

Hi, I would like to share with You the nice experience with Ecco (Defender of the Future) for Sega Dreamcast, its an old game, on a old console, but the result its smooth, relaxing, sometimes impressive a masterpiece beautifully elaborated for all ages, the colors and submarine action rivals todays ps3 and xboxes 360, without saturating your eyesight, its cute by same way its a japanese garden maybe, it has just the enough and lacks of nothing. Enjoy! ps. the music its also great!
My brother has been wanting me to get this video game for awhile

Keeps with the tradition of the Ecco games for the Genesis. Beautiful rendering, fluid controls, immersive music, and notoriously challenging! Even though the story is a reboot having little to do with the original storyline from the Genesis games, I'm still a fan of David Brin and his Sci-fi novels and Uplift universe and think his ideas tie well to Ecco... so it's all good! Hoping for more Ecco games in the future!!
It enjoyable turn to the 2d into 3d world of a dolphin
