Powerfull Little Pixie Wrangler
Being perfectly honest I was so impressed with the performance specs in the datasheet I found online I did not notice the dimensions. So was a bit surprised when the envelope arrived with circuit boards scarcely bigger than my big toe-nail.
Thankfully for my needs small was good and it fitted nicely into my DIY hand crank phone charger. There's more photos and a schematic over at BushcraftUK
It does seem to throw a few short spikes a couple of volts over the desired setting during the first few clock cycles of the start up sequence but without an oscilloscope I cannot see what's going happening exactly. That said they don't appear to be a problem downstream for anything and my phone is charging fine straight from the board.
Once running however the output is rock steady even with the ragged supply coming from the dynamo at low RPM and input voltages swinging wildly between 3 to 20 volts.
My only gripe and it's self inflicted is that the adjustment pot is minuscule! It's not impossible to set accurately but it does take a couple of attempts and steady hands.
The quality of the surface mount construction is pretty good on the whole but quality control seems to suck. Personally if I was on inspection would of kicked back this particular board for re-working but it functions and for the money, meh.. good enough. If it was going into portable gear or subject to vibration I would give it a good look for misaligned components - see photo
On the whole really impressed with it. I only bought two this time so don't read to much into me bitching about the surface mount, the other board was perfect. Ideal bit of kit for a small wind turbine where you want to harvest every scrap of power not dump it as heat in a linear regulator.
