Coming in to Heathrow Airport, the plane suffered inexplicable loss of power to both engines, and it was suddenly likely that the plane would plough into a built-up area outside the airport, with the loss of all lives on board.

  • A good read but lacking technical detail.

I am passionately interested in all subjects aviation and I remember this incident well: it was a major thing to have a British Airways passenger jet crash at Heathrow. This book, by Peter Burkill and his wife Maria, tells the story of the social aftermath of the crash and how it affected them: it would seem that Peter's employers didn't treat him as well as they should have done, leaving him and his wife hurt and out of pocket in a big way. The comparison is made with the treatment of the flight crew of US Airways flight 1549 after it was brought down in the Hudson river. What I found lacking in this book was technical detail about the cause of the crash: there is a brief explanation about icing of the aircraft's fuel but nothing about how it was discovered or the official enquiry into this. Other than that it was a good read and it kept up late for a few nights.
